Happy Hounds Dog Training

Learning Theory and Positive Reinforcement

The Importance of Rewarding 'Good' Behavior

The science of dog training consists of four quadrants: Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, and Negative Punishment. While all of these quadrants are relevant, an experienced and qualified trainer knows that Positive Reinforcement is the most effective and most humane approach to dog training, therefore this is the method used most frequently in all of Jenn's training programs. Through positive reinforcement, dogs learn that 'good' behavior results in positive outcome or reward. Common rewards include food, treats, toys, praise, and attention. When humans consistently reward their dog's ideal behavior, those behaviors increase in frequency and, as a result, undesirable behaviors are eliminated over time.

What about corrections for 'bad' behaviors?

Jenn understands that throughout a lifetime your dog will inevitably display undesirable behavior(s) and she would be doing you a disservice by avoiding this topic. Through your training program, Jenn will teach you how to effectively prevent or gently interrupt undesirable behavior and redirect your dog in order to set him/her up for success. That said, we will NEVER utilize shock collars, prong collars, choke chains, or other forms of pain-inducing corrective devices to punish undesirable behaviors. Jenn is committed to equipping owners with effective communication strategies that proactively teach dogs how to make the most desirable choices without the need for painful corrections - regardless of breed, age, or size.

Training for Dogs | Coaching for Humans

Jenn is dedicated to equipping humans to be the best dog owners they can be and patiently counsels owners through all of the natural challenges that come along with dog ownership. She supports clients with empathy, understanding, and a strong desire to set owners up for lasting success with their dogs. Humans and dogs who work with Happy Hounds can expect to be treated with kindness and compassion throughout every training session and training program.
