Hi! I'm Jenn (along with my dog River) and I'm the owner and founder of Happy Hounds Dog Training. As one of the leading animal behavior experts in the Denver area, I have over 15 years of experience in animal care, behavior and training at renowned organizations including the Denver Zoo, Downtown Aquarium, and the Denver Dumb Friends League - one of the largest animal shelters in the US. Currently, I specialize in positive dog training, behavior conditioning, and the psychological development of puppies and adolescent dogs under 18 months of age.
Education and Certifications: I have a Bachelors degree in Zoology from Colorado State University and a Master's degree in Biology with an emphasis in canine cognitive development and the human-animal bond from Miami University of Oxford. I'm certified as a positive-reinforcement trainer through the Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT) is a member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and is a registered AKC Behavior Evaluator.
Professional Animal Training Experience: I began working with animals professionally in 2006. My first three years were spent training exotic animals and teaching humans about animals through seasonal opportunities at organizations including the Denver Zoo, the Downtown Denver Aquarium, The Wildlife Experience, and the Rocky Mountain Raptor Center. In 2009, I moved to Hawaii to work as a marine mammal trainer at Sea Life Park, where I refined my animal training skills working with dolphins, seals, and sea lions.
In the summer of 2010, I began working at the Denver Dumb Friends League as an Animal Behavior Specialist and Behavior Evaluation Coordinator where I provided behavioral assessments and life-saving training for thousands of dogs in-need of homes. My ever-increasing interest in dog behavior and desire to work more closely with dog owners inspired me to found Happy Hounds Dog Training in 2015. I have been training dogs and their humans ever since.
Teaching Both Dogs and Humans: Alongside my expertise in animal behavior and training, I have over 12 years of professional experience teaching both kids and adults, so you can rest assured that I will successfully teach YOU how to be the trainer! My most recent years in education were spent teaching environmental science and wildlife programming for the University of Colorado. Follow this link to learn more about my Training Philosophy.
The Perfect Fit for Colorado Dog Owners: As an environmental enthusiast and native to Colorado, I spend my free time hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, paddle boarding, and camping in the great outdoors, and always brings my dog along for the fun! I share my life with a 4 year old Border Collie named River, a young Border Collie puppy named Sprocket, and my dog-loving husband, Ryan. My dogs and I play and compete in a variety of dog sports including agility, disc (frisbee), obedience, and barn hunt. If you're interested in trying out a new sport with your dog, I would be happy to help you get started!
Above all else, I'm a steadfast believer who strives to extend kindness, patience, and understanding to all of my clients. My ability to connect so richly and authentically with both animals and humans is a divine gift for which I am endlessly grateful. I am honored to have the opportunity to share my expertise and my passion with other dog owners on a daily basis.
