The purpose of Barn Hunt is to demonstrate a dog’s vermin hunting ability in finding and marking rats in a “barn-like” setting, using straw/hay bales to introduce climbing and tunneling obstacles in the dog’s path. The sport tests speed, agility, hunt drive, scenting ability, surefootedness, and control and responsiveness to handler direction.
These lessons are designed to prepare a dog for competitive trialing in Barn Hunt and are structured in a way that will teach your dog a methodical game with progressive levels wherein the Barn Hunt rules are applied.
No rats are ever harmed in the training of a canine barn hunter. Rats are always safely protected in sturdy dog-proof tubes.
LEVELS: Currently offering lessons for First-Timers, Novice, and Open levels. Also suitable for working on certain skills like tunneling and enhancing scent indications.

In this video River is searching through bales of hay to locate two rats that are hidden in safe, protective tubes throughout the course. Decoy tubes are also hidden to test a dog's ability to indicate which tube has the rat inside.
